PHIRI APPEALS FOR SUPPORT TO HUNGER-AFFECTED HOUSEHOLDS

Minister of Local Government, Ben Phiri, has appealed to individuals and organisations of goodwill to respond to President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s call to support households affected by hunger during the current lean period.

Phiri made the appeal at Satemwa Ground in Thyolo District during the distribution of relief food packs to vulnerable families.

The relief exercise benefited 1,000 households drawn from Thyolo Central and Goliati Constituencies.

The Minister said the food situation in many parts of the country remains critical and requires a collective effort from government, development partners, and well-wishers.

He emphasized that no single institution can address the hunger challenge alone, hence the need for unity and coordinated action.

Muslim Disaster Relief Aid (MaDRA) facilitated the food distribution as part of its humanitarian response to food insecurity.

MaDRA Communications Director, Ibrahim Omar Mataya, said the organisation is mobilising K1 billion to provide relief assistance to 15,000 households nationwide.

Each beneficiary household received a food pack consisting of 20 kilogrammes of maize flour, cooking oil, beans, soya pieces, salt, and K5,000 in cash.
