ANALYSIS: MCP LEADERSHIP CRISIS LAID BARE AS INTERNAL VOICES EXPOSE PARTY SHORTFALLS

The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is increasingly being portrayed as a party grappling with serious internal weaknesses and leadership failure, with criticism now coming from within its own ranks.

These concerns suggest that MCP’s challenges are largely self-inflicted, rooted in poor leadership decisions rather than external pressure.

Nkhotakota Central Member of Parliament Sylvester Ayuba James, an MCP member himself, has openly questioned the party’s direction. He argues that the party is facing a leadership vacuum, claiming that the current leadership has failed to provide clear guidance or decisive action during critical moments.

At the center of this criticism is MCP leader Lazarus Chakwera, who has been accused of remaining silent while senior party officials were being arrested. Critics argue that this silence signals weak leadership and a lack of accountability at a time when the party needed reassurance and transparency.

Further compounding public frustration is the claim that the party leader went on holiday while senior MCP members were in custody.

To many supporters and observers, this move symbolized misplaced priorities and reinforced perceptions of a disconnected and unresponsive leadership.
Ayuba James has also linked MCP’s loss in the September 16, 2025 general election to these leadership failures.

He argues that serious issues that arose under the party’s watch were ignored, allowing public trust to collapse and ultimately costing MCP its electoral mandate.
Instead of openly addressing these concerns, the party leadership has responded defensively.

MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwira criticized Ayuba James for speaking publicly, insisting that party structures should be used to raise concerns—a response some see as an attempt to suppress dissent rather than confront reality.

The situation is further complicated by the irony that Ayuba James is part of the legal defense team for senior MCP officials facing criminal charges, including Secretary General Richard Chimwendo Banda.

This highlights the deep entanglement of legal battles, political survival, and leadership failures within the party.

Overall, these developments present a troubling picture of a party struggling with credibility, unity, and accountability. For many observers, MCP’s biggest challenge is no longer political opposition, but its inability to confront and correct its own leadership shortcomings.
