Yeremiah Chihana, who intends to contest for the position of Member of Parliament for Rumphi Central Constituency under the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), has pledged to establish vocational skills training centres aimed at economically empowering young people in the area.
Chihana made the remarks during recent meetings with youths from the constituency, where he noted that a large number of young people are currently unemployed and lack meaningful daily economic activities.
He said the proposed centres will provide practical skills training to help youths become self-reliant and improve their livelihoods through hands-on work.
According to Chihana, the training will focus on various technical and vocational skills such as tailoring, metal fabrication, electrical installation, and other relevant trades that can generate income.
He emphasized that promoting vocational and technical skills among youths is key to improving their quality of life and enabling them to contribute effectively to national development.
Chihana further stated that empowering youths with practical skills will help reduce dependency and create opportunities for entrepreneurship within local communities.
He added that such initiatives would also play a crucial role in addressing youth-related challenges such as poverty and lack of economic opportunities in the constituency.
Meanwhile, governance and development expert Aubrey Harare has called on the government to establish vocational skills training centres in all constituencies across the country as a way of combating youth poverty and unemployment, noting that many young people currently have no sustainable sources of income.
