Newly appointed Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development Thoko Tembo, who also serves as Member of Parliament for Neno North Constituency, has pledged to prioritize irrigation farming as a strategy to boost food security and stimulate national economic growth.
Speaking shortly after his appointment, Tembo said he plans to advocate for increased funding for irrigation schemes, particularly in drought-prone districts with reliable water sources.
He added that he will work closely with stakeholders to ensure farmers gain access to fair and reliable markets across the country.
“Promoting community-driven agricultural initiatives will not only help Malawians earn income but also contribute significantly to the growth of the national economy,” Tembo stated.
Meanwhile, Russell Msiska, chairperson of the Neno Civil Society Organisations Network, welcomed Tembo’s appointment, expressing optimism that it would positively impact agriculture and food security in Neno and beyond.
Msiska noted that Tembo has consistently demonstrated dedication to development in Neno North, citing his advocacy for the district’s tarmac road, support for education and agricultural initiatives, and the establishment of a free driving school that has benefited many youths.
President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika appointed Tembo as Deputy Minister following a Cabinet reshuffle three months into the administration, signaling confidence in his leadership and capabilities.
Tembo will deputize Minister of Agriculture, Hon Roza Mbilizi, in overseeing the country’s key agricultural policies and programmes.
A member of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Tembo is widely regarded as a youthful, humble, and dedicated leader with growing experience in public service.
His elevation comes at a crucial time when agriculture remains the backbone of Malawi’s economy and a critical driver of food security.
Party members, constituents, and well-wishers have congratulated Tembo on his appointment, expressing confidence that he will serve the nation diligently and contribute meaningfully to strengthening Malawi’s agricultural sector.
