Malawi and Germany have signed a financing agreement for additional funding of EUR 19 million (approximately K35 billion) to support the Malawi Social Cash Transfer Programme. The agreement aims to provide essential relief to the most vulnerable families in the country.
Minister of Finance Simplex Chithyola Banda highlighted the significance of the additional funding, stating, “The Social Cash Transfer Programme is a lifeline for many, and this support will ensure its sustainability and effectiveness.”
Minister of Gender, Community Development, and Social Welfare Jean Sendeza emphasized the impact the funding will have on empowering vulnerable families, women, and girls. “This funding will provide them with the support they need to thrive,” Sendeza said. Her ministry is responsible for managing the programme.
The German Ambassador to Malawi, Ute König, expressed Germany’s commitment to Malawi’s development. “This funding is a testament to Germany’s enduring partnership with Malawi and our shared goal of fostering social equity and development,” König said.
The additional funding from Germany is expected to bolster efforts to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of the Social Cash Transfer Programme, which plays a critical role in supporting the country’s most vulnerable populations.
