FINANCE MINISTER WARNS AGAINST POLITICISING MEDF, URGES PROFESSIONALISM

The Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralisation, Joseph Mwanamvekha, has cautioned against the politicisation of the Malawi Enterprise Development Fund (MEDF), calling on its management to uphold professionalism and serve all citizens impartially.

Mwanamvekha made the remarks during the launch of MEDF Limited’s 2026–2030 Strategic Plan—formerly the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF)—held at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe.

In his address, the Minister emphasized that the institution must not be used as a political tool, but should instead operate with integrity, fairness, and a commitment to national development.

He further reminded Malawians that funds disbursed through MEDF are not handouts, but loans aimed at supporting business growth and economic empowerment.

He stressed the importance of responsible borrowing and repayment to ensure the fund benefits more citizens.

Mwanamvekha also challenged the institution’s management to strengthen loan recovery systems, warning that unpaid loans threaten the sustainability and long-term impact of the fund.

The launch of the strategic plan marks a new phase for MEDF, with expectations that it will play a key role in fostering entrepreneurship and driving inclusive economic growth across the country.
