CHINA HANDS OVER K44 BILLION M1 DUAL CARRIAGEWAY TO MALAWI GOVERNMENT

The People’s Republic of China has officially handed over the newly constructed M1 Crossroads–Kanengo dual carriageway to the Malawi Government in Lilongwe, marking a major milestone in the country’s infrastructure development.

The road project, which cost approximately K44 billion, is expected to significantly improve transportation efficiency and ease congestion within the capital city.

The development comes as part of ongoing efforts to modernize Malawi’s road network.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Chinese Ambassador to Malawi, Lu Xu, said the upgrade of the road into a dual carriageway has already begun transforming traffic flow in the city.

She noted that the improved infrastructure is also expected to stimulate economic activity, particularly within Lilongwe’s industrial areas, by facilitating smoother movement of goods and services.

Ambassador Lu further emphasized that the project reflects the strengthening bilateral relations between China and Malawi, highlighting continued cooperation in key development sectors.

In his remarks, Malawi’s Minister of Transport and Public Works, Jappie Mhango, described the road as a landmark achievement for the capital.

Mhango expressed gratitude to the Chinese government for its support, stating that such infrastructure projects are vital to Malawi’s long-term development goals.

He added that road transport remains the dominant mode of transportation in the country, making investments in this sector crucial for economic growth and national connectivity.
