PRESIDENT CHAKWERA TOURS DEMETER MEGA FARM TO BOOST MALAWI’S AGRICULTURAL SECTOR

On Thursday, His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, toured Demeter Mega Farm, located in the area of Traditional Authority Mkaya in Balaka District. This visit underscores President Chakwera’s commitment to revitalizing Malawi’s agricultural sector through the promotion of mega farming.

Accompanied by First Lady Madam Monica Chakwera, the President was warmly received by Vice President Dr. Micheal Bizwick Usi, Minister of Agriculture Sam Kawale, and other top government officials. During the visit, President Chakwera highlighted the crucial role that mega farms can play in bolstering Malawi’s economy by 2063.

“Investing in mega farms is not just about increasing agricultural output; it’s about securing the future of our nation’s economy,” President Chakwera stated. “We need both individuals and the private sector to embrace this initiative to achieve sustainable growth.”

Demeter Agriculture Limited, established in 2004, stands as a beacon of innovation and productivity in Malawi’s agricultural landscape. The company is a fully certified integrated seed producer, specializing in both open-pollinated varieties (OPV) and hybrid maize. In addition to maize, Demeter produces a range of legumes including groundnuts, soybeans, cowpeas, sugar beans, and pigeon peas.

The seeds are meticulously processed, treated, and packaged at Demeter’s facility in Lilongwe before being distributed through an extensive network of outlets and reputable distributors. This ensures that high-quality seeds reach farmers across the country, enhancing their productivity and contributing to national food security.

During the tour, President Chakwera and his entourage observed the advanced farming techniques and state-of-the-art facilities at Demeter Mega Farm. The visit provided an opportunity to witness firsthand the potential of mega farms to transform Malawi’s agricultural sector.

The President’s visit to Demeter Mega Farm marks a significant step in his administration’s ongoing efforts to modernize agriculture in Malawi. By advocating for mega farming, President Chakwera aims to create a more resilient and prosperous agricultural sector capable of driving economic growth and improving the livelihoods of Malawians.

As Malawi strives towards its Vision 2063 goals, the emphasis on mega farming initiatives like Demeter Mega Farm will play a pivotal role in shaping a sustainable and prosperous future for the nation.
