JOYCE BANDA ANNOUNCES PEOPLE’S PARTY DEPARTURE FROM TONSE ALLIANCE

Former President Dr. Joyce Banda has announced that the People’s Party (PP) is withdrawing from the Tonse Alliance, a coalition initially formed in 2020 to challenge the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). Speaking at a rally in Zomba, Dr. Banda indicated that the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) convention was a key factor in the PP’s decision to exit the coalition.

The Tonse Alliance, which was established to unite various parties including MCP, PP, UTM, and AFORD against the DPP, has faced instability since its inception. UTM and AFORD had already departed from the alliance earlier, highlighting ongoing fractures within the coalition.

Social media comments suggest that Dr. Banda’s announcement is noteworthy but is unlikely to significantly impact the MCP. Over time, the People’s Party has diminished in political strength and influence, making its departure less consequential for the MCP’s current standing and future prospects.

Despite the surprise of Dr. Banda’s exit, especially given her previously cordial relationship with President Lazarus Chakwera, the rally also saw supporters urging Dr. Banda to consider a presidential run in the 2025 general elections. While she has not confirmed her candidacy, her departure from the alliance suggests the possibility of a solo bid for the presidency.
