CATHOLICS URGED TO SUPPORT NANKHUNDA SEMINARY’S CENTENARY CELEBRATION IN ZOMBA

Bishop Alfred Mateyu Chaima of the Zomba Diocese has called on Catholics to support Nankhunda Minor Seminary’s centenary celebration, which will be held on October 19th, this year.

Bishop Chaima made the appeal at Zomba Cathedral Hall during a fundraising dinner and dance to mobilize 100 million kwacha for the centenary celebration.

Nankhunda Minor Seminary is at the foot of Zomba Mountain, in Traditional Authority Mulumbe’s area, and was opened in 1924. It has produced Archbishop Thomas Luke Msusa, Archbishop George Desmond Tambala, Bishop Emeritus Allan Chamgwera, Bishop Alfred Mateyu Chaima, and other Catholic priests.

He said that apart from bishops and priests, Nankhunda Minor Seminary has also produced cabinet ministers, members of parliament, journalists, and professionals from other fields.

Therefore, he called on Catholic faithful in the Zomba Diocese and other dioceses across Malawi to join hands to help Nankhunda Minor Seminary with its operation and to renovate its teaching and learning equipment and infrastructure.

He acknowledged the presence of Archbishop Thomas Luke Msusa and priests from the Blantyre Archdiocese at the Nankhunda Minor Seminary fundraising event.

“Let me also thank Bishop Emeritus Allan Chamgwera, priests, sisters from the Zomba Diocese, and Catholic faithful in the diocese for attending the fundraising event,” Bishop Chaima added.

He further called for more support to help Nankhunda Minor Seminary continue its operations.

Chairperson of the fundraising committee, Prisca Chirwa, said the dinner and dance were expected to mobilize 40 million kwacha and expressed hope that the event would raise the target amount.

She also thanked all those who patronized the event to help the seminary with its operation and disclosed that the committee will hold another fundraising event in August to reach the target of 100 million kwacha.

In his remarks, Archbishop Msusa said he felt obliged to attend the fundraising event since he is one of the products of Nankhunda Seminary.

Archbishop Msusa, who contributed K250,000, therefore urged all those who attended Nankhunda Minor Seminary to take part in all fundraising activities that are meant to assist the seminary’s operations.

Some notable names that attended the dinner and dance are Professor Francis Moto, Professor Dorothy Nampota, Professor Ngeyi Kanyongolo, Eastern Region Commissioner of Police Barbra Mchenga Tsiga, Members of Parliament like Bester Awali, Mark Botomani, John Bande, and others.
