DISTINGUISHING PUBLIC SERVICE FROM POLITICAL ALLEGIANCES

Waking up today, I was inundated with publications claiming that some UTM Party officials are clinging to the government. The discourse was largely fueled by expectations that cabinet ministers affiliated with UTM should resign now that UTM has exited the Tonse Alliance. To me, this notion is nothing short of juvenile brains at work. Expecting a minister to resign solely because their political party has shifted alliances fails to grasp the fundamental distinction between serving Malawi and serving a political party.

First and foremost, it is crucial to recognize that these ministers are not in their positions to serve a political party, they are there to serve the government of Malawi, which ultimately benefits all Malawians. Their allegiance is to the nation, not to the transient alliances of political entities. This is not a novel concept; it has precedence in Malawi’s political history.

During Joyce Banda’s regime, we witnessed cabinet ministers from opposition parties serving in government roles. Similarly, President Lazarus Chakwera appointed Owen Chomanika to his cabinet despite Chomanika being from an opposition party. Neither of these ministers resigned from their parties or refused their appointments on grounds of political affiliation. Why? Because they understood that their duty was to Malawi and her citizens, not to a particular political faction.

Therefore, the expectation that UTM members should resign from their cabinet positions is unfounded. These ministers are continuing to serve the government, fulfilling their responsibilities to the nation rather than adhering to the shifting sands of party politics. It is imperative to differentiate between serving a political party and serving the government. The former is about loyalty to a political cause, while the latter is about dedication to public service and national development.

The calls for UTM-affiliated ministers to step down are misguided. These ministers remain committed to their roles within the government, focused on delivering benefits to all Malawians. Let us not conflate political maneuvering with the noble duty of governance. It is high time we appreciate the distinction between political service and government service, recognizing the steadfast commitment of these ministers to the nation above all else.
