UDF POSTPONES NATIONAL ELECTIVE CONFERENCE AMIDST PREPARATION CONCERNS

The United Democratic Front (UDF) has announced the delay of its National Elective Conference originally scheduled for August 3.

The postponement follows a similar move by the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD), which also rescheduled its indaba a month ago.

In a statement signed by UDF Acting Publicity Secretary Yusuf Mwawa, the party’s National Executive Committee decided to delay the conference to ensure adequate preparation.

“We want to prepare well and ensure it meets the expectations of members and stakeholders,” reads part of the statement.

Political Expert George Chaima noted that several parties, including the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and AFORD, have also changed their conference dates.

“Parties need to prepare for such conferences, especially in terms of finances. Without sufficient funds, they can’t proceed with their plans,” said Chaima.

Chaima also suggested that unorganized party structures might be another reason for the postponement, as the party needs to sort these out before holding the convention.

“These structures are where delegates come from. Holding a convention before organizing party structures may affect the entire conference’s outcome,” he added.

Chaima advised political parties to ensure all processes are followed before conventions to avoid negatively impacting general elections.

One issue affecting the outcome of such conferences, including primary elections within political parties, is the endorsement of candidates.

UDF is expected to announce new dates for its elective conference soon.
