Malawi and the European Union (EU) have signed EUR 93 million financing agreements to develop the country’s power infrastructure and enhance civil society’s role in development.
Speaking at the official signing ceremony in Lilongwe, EU Ambassador to Malawi, Rune Skinnebach, said that EUR 55 million is a concessional loan from the European Investment Bank, and EUR 30 million is a grant from the EU.
These funds will finance the rehabilitation of the Eastern Backbone power transmission line, which supplies power to the northern region.
Skinnebach also announced an additional EUR 8 million from the EU budget to support civil society organizations in Malawi, aimed at creating jobs for Malawian youth.
Minister of Finance Simplex Chithyola Banda, who signed the agreement on behalf of the Malawi government, emphasized the importance of EU support for Malawi’s stable energy sector to facilitate production and value addition.
Chithyola assured the EU delegation that the government will closely monitor the progress of the projects to ensure they benefit the intended recipients.
