The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) launched the long-awaited 2025 elections on Friday, urging stakeholders to participate fully for credible elections.
MEC Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja made the call at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) during the unveiling of electoral activities.
“Let me call upon all stakeholders to make sure they participate fully in all the processes to promote democracy and conduct successful elections,” said Mtalimanja.
She also encouraged political parties, NGOs, and religious leaders to advocate for the participation of women and youth in political representation.
MEC outlined key activities, including a pilot phase of voter registration this month, a full rollout in September, presentation of nomination papers in May and June 2025, the launch of the political campaign on June 15, 2025, and polling day on September 16, 2025.
The Commission assured ongoing updates and meetings with stakeholders to ensure comprehensive electoral information sharing.
Justice Mtalimanja added that in addition to the National Identity Card, the National Registration Bureau (NRB) document containing the ID number will be accepted during voter registration.
She noted that new registration devices have been procured and will be used during the pilot phase for stakeholders to evaluate.
United Nations Resident Representative Rebecca Adda Dontoh emphasized the importance of stakeholder consensus on the electoral process and expressed commitment to supporting Malawi in conducting free and fair elections in 2025.
Meanwhile, political parties in Malawi are set to hold their elective conventions starting this month, with the Malawi Congress Party and the Democratic Progressive Party leading the schedule.
