In a landmark judgement by the High Court, former Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) governor Dalitso Kabambe has been found to have overseen a reckless administration, resulting in a significant financial loss under the Farm Inputs Subsidy Programme (FISP). The court revealed that under Kabambe’s tenure, approximately K2.9 billion was mismanaged, casting a shadow over his leadership capabilities.
The judgement, delivered by Judge Allan Hans Muhome, arose from a defamation case where Mulli Brothers Limited (MBL) sued the consulting firm Deloitte. Deloitte had conducted a forensic audit report indicating that MBL had benefited from dubious payments from RBM. The High Court dismissed MBL’s defamation claims, essentially upholding the findings of the forensic audit.
This ruling not only highlights the financial mismanagement during Kabambe’s time as RBM governor but also raises questions about his suitability to lead Malawi as president. As the 2025 presidential elections approach, the Malawian public must critically assess whether Kabambe embodies the leadership qualities they seek in their next leader.
In light of this background, it remains to be seen how Malawians will respond to Kabambe’s candidacy and whether they will place their trust in him for the nation’s highest office.
