Malawi First has decided to cancel its planned demonstrations at Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) offices, initially set for tomorrow, following successful negotiations with MRA officials over the contentious issue of tax stamps.
In a briefing held on Wednesday afternoon, Steven Kapoloma, MRA Head of Corporate Affairs, and Bon Kalindo, President of Malawi First, announced that their discussions had been productive and amicable. Both parties reached a consensus that the implementation of tax stamps should not place an undue burden on small businesses.
Despite the resolution regarding tax stamps, Kalindo confirmed that Malawi First will still proceed with their planned demonstrations in Blantyre.
These protests will focus on issues related to registration and political arrests. Kalindo stated that a petition would be delivered to the office of the District Commissioner in Blantyre as part of the ongoing advocacy efforts.
The decision to cancel the demonstrations at MRA offices reflects a positive step in addressing concerns raised by Malawi First while continuing to pursue other key issues through public engagement.
