MALAWI AND DRC SIGN BILATERAL AIR SERVICE AGREEMENT TO BOOST DIRECT FLIGHTS

Malawi and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have signed a Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) that will enable national airlines from both countries to operate direct flights and provide air services within agreed-upon protocols. The agreement, signed on Thursday, marks a significant milestone in enhancing air connectivity between the two nations.

The agreement was signed by Secretary for Transport and Public Works, Engineer David Mzandu, on behalf of the Malawian government, and Mr. Kayembe Katubalondji Francois, Director of Aviation Transport for the Congo Civil Aviation Authority, representing the DRC government.

Under the BASA, Malawian Airlines will now be able to fly directly to the DRC, with the ability to operate routes between Kinshasa and Lubumbashi. Similarly, Congo Airlines will be able to fly directly to Lilongwe and operate routes between Lilongwe and Blantyre.

This agreement is expected to bring several benefits, including reduced travel time between the two countries and the opening of new markets for the respective national airlines. By improving air connectivity, the BASA is anticipated to strengthen economic and trade relations between Malawi and the DRC, facilitating easier and more efficient travel for both business and leisure.

The signing of the BASA underscores both countries’ commitment to enhancing regional cooperation and fostering closer ties through improved transportation networks. As the agreement takes effect, it is expected to contribute significantly to the growth of the aviation sector in both Malawi and the DRC.
