President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has intensified efforts to strengthen bilateral relations with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), focusing on critical issues like fuel supply security and food stability.
During a meeting with His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, Chakwera highlighted Malawi’s struggles with an erratic fuel supply caused by the open tender procurement system. He explained the negative economic impact this system has had on Malawi over the years, a concern Sheikh Mohamed acknowledged with understanding and solidarity.
President Chakwera expressed optimism about the UAE’s commitment to becoming a key partner in resolving Malawi’s fuel insecurity through the newly adopted Government-to-Government (G2G) arrangement.
In addition to fuel security, Chakwera sought the UAE’s continued support for food security. This comes in the wake of a State of National Disaster declaration earlier this year, prompted by a prolonged dry spell that severely affected Malawi’s harvest.
The meeting reflects Chakwera’s ongoing efforts to address Malawi’s pressing challenges by engaging international partners for sustainable solutions.
