WOMAN CAUGHT SMUGGLING CANNABIS IN MEAL FOR HUSBAND SERVING LIFE SENTENCE

A Zomba Maximum Prison officer thwarted an attempt by a woman who tried to smuggle cannabis concealed in a meal intended for her 39-year-old husband, serving a life sentence for murder and trafficking in human tissues.

Eastern Region Malawi Prison Services Public Relations Officer, Jonas Nyasulu, confirmed the incident, stating that security officer Charles Chikoti intercepted the contraband at the prison’s main gate during a routine search on December 8, 2024.

Nyasulu identified the suspect as Jessie Mpanira, from Danken Village, Traditional Authority Malemia in Zomba. She attempted to deliver the cannabis to her husband, Medson Madzialenga, who has been incarcerated at the prison since 2016.

“The interception underscores the effectiveness of prison security measures. To prevent similar incidents, we will continue to strengthen security at the entrance and other strategic points,” Nyasulu said.

Mpanira is currently in custody at Zomba Police Station awaiting prosecution. Her husband, Medson Madzialenga, hails from Simbi Village, Traditional Authority Chakhaza in Dowa.
