Some officials from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), who were arrested on Monday in connection to separate charges, have been granted bail after appearing before courts in Lilongwe and Blantyre on Tuesday.
Former Finance Minister and DPP Vice President for the South, Joseph Mwanamveka, was arrested alongside four others, including Dr. Collins Magalasi, Lloyd Muhara, and Cliff Chiunda, over alleged financial fraud involving Salima Sugar Company. The group appeared before Chief Resident Magistrate Austin Banda in Lilongwe, where they were granted bail.
In Blantyre, DPP National Organizing Secretary Sameer Suleman surrendered himself to police after a warrant for his arrest circulated. Suleman was charged in connection with remarks he made at a party rally, which authorities said could potentially breach the peace.
When appearing in court on Tuesday, Suleman was also granted bail under strict conditions, including a K500,000 cash bond, a K2 million non-cash surety, monthly reporting to the South West Police Headquarters, and the temporary surrender of his travel documents.
These arrests have drawn widespread attention as the DPP faces increasing scrutiny over alleged misconduct during its time in government. The party, now in opposition, has described the arrests as politically motivated.
Legal proceedings for all involved individuals are set to continue as investigations progress.
