The Women Judges Association of Malawi (WOJAM) has named 95-year-old Alice Catherine Kavwenje of Ntchisi as a role model for girls’ education under the Nzotheka Program. Kavwenje was recognized for her extraordinary accomplishment in single-handedly educating all 11 of her children following her husband’s death in 1982.
WOJAM President and Blantyre High Court Judge, Justice Jean Kayira, announced Kavwenje’s appointment, praising her resilience and dedication to ensuring her children received a quality education. Among her children are five accountants, two engineers, a nurse, two teachers, and one group village head.

“Kavwenje’s achievement is a testament to her strength and determination. She is an inspiration for girls to continue their education up to the tertiary level,” said Justice Kayira. “WOJAM is proud to celebrate her meaningful 95 years of life and her role as a symbol of resilience and commitment to education.”
Kavwenje expressed gratitude for the recognition, describing her efforts as a personal triumph.
“Educating my 11 children was a great accomplishment. Being named a role model is an honor, and I hope to inspire other children to pursue education,” she said.
Kavwenje, who will turn 95 on January 28, 2025, hails from Kwendakwina Village, Traditional Authority Chilooko, in Ntchisi.
