CHAKWERA FACES PARLIAMENT OVER SONA QUESTIONS TODAY

Malawi’s President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera is set to appear before Parliament today to respond to questions from Members of Parliament (MPs) regarding his State of the Nation Address (SONA), delivered on 14 February 2025.

According to First Deputy Speaker Madalitso Kazombo, Chakwera will arrive at 14:00 to address five pre-submitted questions, each followed by supplementary inquiries. MPs will have the opportunity to engage the president on key national issues, including those raised during the SONA.

This appearance aligns with Section 89(3)(c) of the Constitution and Parliamentary Standing Order 70(b). MPs have spent the past two weeks debating the SONA, with opposition members criticizing it for overlooking critical issues facing Malawians.

Meanwhile, Minister of Finance Simplex Chithyola Banda is set to present the 2025/2026 national budget on Friday. Parliament will then hold two weeks of cluster meetings to scrutinize the budget before formal deliberations.
