President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has called on young people to be whistleblowers in the fight against corruption, emphasizing that the vice remains one of Malawi’s biggest challenges.
Speaking at the State of the Nation Address (SONA) for the Youths held at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre on Thursday, President Chakwera reiterated his administration’s commitment to tackling corruption by strengthening governance systems. He stressed that the battle requires collective efforts from all Malawians, particularly the youth.
Under the theme “Gawo Lathu Popititfsa Chitukuko Patsogolo”, the interactive session allowed young people to raise concerns and provide input on national development. The President assured them that their opinions would help shape governance decisions, reinforcing that the youth are an integral part of his government.
Among the key issues raised was the complicated registration process for National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF) loans, which student and entrepreneur Innocent Mandili said was a major obstacle for young business owners. In response, Chakwera pledged to prioritize financial literacy programs to help youth properly manage and sustain their businesses.
Regarding sports development, the President acknowledged that some projects face delays due to high-interest government loans, limiting resources for completion. He also responded to concerns from young miners, promising to ensure that youth in all economic sectors, including mining, have better access to NEEF loans.
Sandra Misasu highlighted the lack of follow-up mechanisms for youth initiatives, stressing that many projects fail after receiving government support. In agreement, Chakwera assured that SONA for the Youths would not be a one-time event but the beginning of continued engagement for meaningful change.
Addressing Vision 2063, the President assured that while the government is tackling immediate national challenges, long-term goals remain a priority. He also announced plans to establish youth clubs across the country, starting in Ntchisi, to enhance technology access, equipping them with 100 computers and internet centers.
On food security, Chakwera revealed that the World Bank has provided funds for purchasing relief maize to assist vulnerable Malawians.
Chakwera concluded by commending the youth for their commitment to transforming the country, announcing that the next Youth SONA will be held in Mzuzu at Grand Palace Hotel on a date to be confirmed.
