Self Realite Organisation has donated paw paw seedlings to five primary schools in Nsanje District’s East Bank to promote fruit tree planting and combat the effects of climate change.
The beneficiaries—Masenjere, Natibule, Chinyanje, Nakuyu, and Kalulu primary schools—received the seedlings as part of the initiative. Additionally, 330 learners will each receive three paw paw seedlings to plant at home.
Self Realite Executive Director, Jamester Langwani, said the donation was prompted by the loss of fruit trees due to climate change. He emphasized the nutritional benefits of fruits and the importance of tree planting in 35 village clusters under Traditional Authority Mlolo.
“We opted for paw paw trees because they grow and bear fruit quickly and multiple times,” Langwani explained. He urged learners and teachers to nurture the trees for future benefits.
Chinyanje Primary School head teacher, John Mpotalinga, expressed gratitude for the donation, highlighting how the trees would supplement the school’s feeding program, supported by the World Food Programme.
Speaking on behalf of learners, Standard 8 student Kafukiza Memerise pledged to care for the trees until they bear fruit.
