CHAKWERA BACKS CEASEFIRE, URGES SUSTAINABLE PEACE IN DRC AT SADC SUMMIT

President Lazarus Chakwera attended a virtual SADC Extraordinary Troika Summit on Thursday, focusing on regional efforts to restore peace in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The summit, hosted by Tanzania, brought together SADC leaders to discuss a sustainable path to stability in the conflict-hit region.

Chakwera reaffirmed his decision to withdraw Malawi’s troops from eastern DRC, emphasizing the need for a ceasefire and peace negotiations. He urged SADC to adopt a “more sustainable” approach to achieving lasting peace.

Alongside Presidents Hakainde Hichilema (Zambia), Cyril Ramaphosa (South Africa), Felix Tshisekedi (DRC), and summit chair Samia Suluhu Hassan (Tanzania), Chakwera helped draft a resolution outlining peace efforts for the next six months. In August 2025, he will assume the chairmanship of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security.

In her closing remarks, President Suluhu reaffirmed SADC’s commitment to supporting peace in the DRC and condemned violence against civilians.

Chakwera was joined by Foreign Affairs Minister Nancy Tembo, Defense Minister Monica Changanamuno, and Malawi Defense Force (MDF) General Paul Valentino Phiri.
