Bishop Alfred Mateyu Chaima of the Catholic Diocese of Zomba has called on individuals of goodwill, organisations, faith-based groups, and the government to support students with disabilities at Mpalankhanga Special Needs Secondary School.
The school, managed by the Servants of the Blessed Virgin Mary (SBVM) congregation, currently enrolls 90 students with various physical disabilities, including hearing and visual impairments.
Speaking during a jubilee celebration at the school, Bishop Chaima said the event was part of the Catholic Church’s global observance of 2025 as the “Pilgrims of Hope” year. He emphasised the need for collective efforts to support students with disabilities, urging communities and institutions to step forward with assistance.
“People with disabilities require diverse support to meet their needs,” he said. “I appeal to individuals, organisations, church groups, and the government to provide the much-needed assistance.”
The Bishop also encouraged the students to lead hopeful, positive lives, reminding them that God is always with them in their daily lives and educational journey.
“I commend the Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary for their compassion towards students with special needs. May the Lord be with you,” he added.
Sister Agnes Njirayakonda, headteacher at Mpalankhanga Special Needs Secondary School, praised the Diocese for organising the jubilee and prayers. She also appealed to well-wishers to assist the school with food and non-food items to help sustain its mission of providing quality and inclusive secondary education.
