President Lazarus Chakwera has officially handed over cheques to beneficiaries of the 2024 Presidential Charity Golf Initiative, following a successful tournament held last October at Limbe Country Club.
During a presentation ceremony at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, Chakwera underscored the urgent need to support students facing financial hardships, stating that many are unable to complete their education due to lack of resources. He praised the initiative’s ongoing impact in bridging the education gap since its launch.
Chairperson of the Presidential Charity Initiative Committee, Vizenge Kumwenda, commended the President for establishing the program and expressed gratitude for the strong backing from corporate partners during the fundraising campaign.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, LUANAR student Tamanda Kumwela highlighted the importance of accessible education, stressing that financial challenges should not block anyone from achieving academic goals. She applauded President Chakwera for championing the cause of underprivileged learners.
The 2024 event raised K609 million, with six public universities each receiving K50 million to support needy students. Additionally, K300 million has been allocated to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA) to aid the reconstruction of Muona Primary School in Nsanje, which was severely damaged by Cyclone Freddy.
