CHAKWERA PLEDGES HIGHER EDUCATION REFORM AS CATALYST FOR NATIONAL GROWTH

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has reaffirmed his commitment to transforming Malawi’s higher education sector as a foundation for national development.

Speaking on Wednesday during a graduation ceremony at the University of Malawi in Zomba, Dr. Chakwera addressed graduates from various faculties who received certificates, diplomas, and degrees.

He described his presidency as a decade of transition focused on dismantling outdated systems and building a just, productive society. Among the key reforms he highlighted were the abolition of the discriminatory quota system, the creation of a standalone Ministry of Higher Education, and the expansion of university enrollment from 30,000 in 2020 to over 75,000 by 2025.

The President praised Minister of Higher Education Dr. Jessie Kabwila for maintaining academic standards and taking decisive action against illegitimate institutions.

He also announced plans to create three million jobs and provide 500 billion kwacha in loans to support entrepreneurship.

Dr. Christopher Guta, Chairperson of the University of Malawi Council, thanked the President, noting that government initiatives are significantly advancing higher education.

Vice Chancellor Professor Samson Sajidu urged the graduating students to uphold integrity and ethics as they enter various professional fields.
