President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has challenged the 344 newly graduated students of the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) to choose between becoming producers or remaining consumers.
Speaking as Chancellor of the university during the graduation ceremony, President Chakwera noted that Malawi stands at a crossroads and must choose a path that leads to productivity and innovation.
“The first path before us is to become a nation and a people that produce more than they consume. The second path is to remain a nation and a people that consume more than they produce,” he said.
He urged the graduates to dedicate their lives to production, encouraging them to research lucrative areas, identify market needs, and create innovative, market-ready solutions.
“Orient your entire life towards production. Start researching what areas of production are most lucrative and what markets are available. Create innovative solutions tailored to market needs and forge partnerships that will help you bring those ideas to life in a win-win arrangement,” he added.

MUBAS Vice Chancellor, Associate Professor Nancy Chitera, highlighted the innovative work done by students during their time at the institution, especially in support of the Agriculture, Tourism, and Mining (ATM) strategy. She urged the graduates to continue producing impactful innovations for Malawi and beyond.
“They leave MUBAS not only with knowledge but also with hands-on experience in research, innovation, and production,” she said.
One of the graduates, McHurrington Phiri, who earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce (Taxation), expressed optimism about his future. He said the knowledge he gained will help him guide clients through complex tax issues in his professional career.
