Malawi has reaffirmed its commitment to Africa’s digital transformation by renewing its status as an active member of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU). This follows the official submission of its Instrument of Ratification to the ATU Constitution and Convention in Nairobi, Kenya.
The submission was made by the Director General of the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), Daud Suleman, and was received on behalf of the ATU Secretary-General by Mrs. Alice Koech. The process was facilitated by Malawi’s High Commission to Kenya, led by Her Excellency Callista Mutharika.
The submission included the original copy of the Instruments of Ratification, reaffirming Malawi’s commitment to the objectives and principles of the ATU. The ATU Secretariat welcomed the timely move, noting it as a strong show of support for the Union’s mission to advance the ICT sector across Africa for sustainable development.

This ratification underscores Malawi’s recognition of the pivotal role telecommunications play in driving economic growth and social progress. It also aligns with MACRA’s broader strategy to enhance regional integration, harmonize policies, and build capacity in the ICT sector.
Speaking at the event, MACRA Director General Daud Suleman stated:
“The Government of Malawi, through MACRA, looks forward to continued collaboration with the ATU and fellow member states in promoting inclusive, secure, and innovative telecommunications frameworks that support the continent’s long-term development goals.”
He added that this development strengthens Malawi’s ability to actively participate in ATU initiatives, programs, and decision-making processes aimed at advancing Africa’s digital future.
