CHAKWERA HAILS $100M BAKHRESA FACTORY AS BOOST TO MALAWI 2063 AGENDA

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has hailed the newly commissioned US$100 million solvent extraction plant and cooking oil refinery at Bakhresa Malawi Limited as a major milestone in advancing the Malawi 2063 agenda through enhanced production and industrialisation.

Speaking on Wednesday during the commissioning ceremony in Blantyre, President Chakwera said the investment represents a significant step toward economic transformation.

“This factory positions Malawi as a producer of export-quality bread flour. The daily production of 500 metric tons of bread flour embodies the productivity envisioned in Malawi 2063. It also creates over 300 jobs and provides our farmers with a reliable market for their soya,” said Chakwera.

He further noted that his administration is committed to facilitating investments that boost the productive capacity of Malawian farmers.

“Currently, Malawi has the capacity to process 600,000 metric tons of soya annually. With the addition of this Bakhresa plant, the figure rises to nearly 800,000 metric tons. However, our farmers only produce 200,000 metric tons, so we must support them to quadruple production to fully utilise this capacity,” he added.

Minister of Industry and Trade Vitumbiko Mumba commended Bakhresa for the investment, noting that it promotes industrial growth, job creation, import substitution, and inclusive economic development.

Bakhresa Malawi Limited General Manager Venkatesh Rao Pattipati reaffirmed the company’s commitment to further investments aligned with Malawi’s National Export Strategy and industrialisation goals.

Bakhresa Malawi has expanded from a flour milling operation into various sectors, including Azam laundry soap, Azam TV, and now cooking oil production—strengthening its contribution to the national economy.
