GREENBELT AUTHORITY DISPATCHES 750MT OF MAIZE TO NFRA

The Greenbelt Authority (GBA) has dispatched 750 metric tons of maize from its Chikwawa Maize Mega Farm in Traditional Authority Khombedza, Salima District. The maize is en route to the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) headquarters in Kanengo, Lilongwe.

The maize will bolster NFRA’s efforts to mitigate hunger and support the National Disaster Agency in responding to emergencies across the country.

Speaking during the flag-off, GBA Chief Executive Officer Eric Dudley Chidzungu said the 750 metric tons mark the initial consignment, with more maize currently being processed for delivery. He also revealed that 300 bags from the same harvest were donated to Salima District Hospital, which is currently grappling with food shortages.

Salima District Commissioner James Mwenda welcomed the donation, saying it came at a critical time and commended GBA for its community support.

Also present at the event was NFRA Chief Executive Officer George Macheka, who praised GBA for upholding its 2023 partnership agreement with NFRA aimed at boosting national food security.

“We value GBA’s consistency. Last year, they cultivated 100 hectares; this year, it’s 200 hectares, and we are witnessing the results. GBA’s maize will contribute significantly to the 60 billion kwacha NFRA maize purchase target this year,” Macheka said.

GBA is currently running mega farm projects in multiple districts including Karonga, Nkhatabay, and Mangochi as part of Malawi’s broader drive for agricultural commercialization and food sustainability.
