CHAKWERA JOINS FINAL STRETCH OF CHARITY MARATHON

His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, on Wednesday morning joined the final kilometre of the Fit to Run Malawi Expedition, a 24-hour non-stop fundraising relay organized by Tauka Athletics Club.

The symbolic stretch from the Area 18 Interchange to the Area 18 Memorial Tower in Lilongwe marked the culmination of a nationwide effort to raise K300 million for the construction of Malawi’s first-ever high-performance athletics centre.

Briefed at the finish line, President Chakwera hailed the initiative as a “game changer” for the country’s sporting future. “This centre will be a cradle for elite athletes who can put Malawi on the global sporting map,” he said, calling on individuals and organizations to support the cause.

In addition to the athletics facility, the funds will also go toward purchasing a bus to support physically challenged athletes across Malawi.

The President was joined by senior government officials, Sports Council leaders, and prominent business figures, underscoring national support for the ambitious sporting vision.

Organizers of the event said the President’s participation gave the initiative “a powerful push across the finish line” both literally and symbolically.
