In a defining moment for Malawi’s 2025 presidential race, President Lazarus Chakwera has officially filed his nomination papers with the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), confirming his bid for a second term. The submission took place today as the country inches closer to the September 16 general elections.
Breaking weeks of speculation, Chakwera unveiled Minister of Trade and Industry Vitumbiko Mumba as his running mate under the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) banner. The duo jointly signed MEC’s electoral code of conduct, pledging a campaign grounded in peace, integrity, and democratic values.
“I am deeply grateful for the trust Malawians placed in me during my first term,” said Chakwera. “Our next chapter will focus on tackling economic hardship, improving social welfare, and pushing forward a development agenda that puts People Over Politics.”
Presiding MEC Commissioner, Justice Annabel Mtalimanja, congratulated the President on his nomination and called on all presidential contenders to observe the electoral code. She emphasized the need for unity, peaceful campaigning, and for candidates to prepare their supporters to accept the election outcome gracefully.
With the race officially underway, all eyes now turn to the campaign trail and what this Chakwera-Mumba ticket could mean for Malawi’s future.
