CHAKWERA TOPS RECOGNITION IN IPOR PRESIDENTIAL AWARENESS STUDY

The Institute of Public Opinion and Research (IPOR) has released fresh survey results showing President Lazarus Chakwera as the most recognized presidential candidate in Malawi, commanding an impressive 85 percent awareness rate nationwide.

According to the study, former President Peter Mutharika follows closely with 79 percent recognition, while UDF leader Atupele Muluzi stands at 50 percent. Former President Joyce Banda is known by 40 percent of respondents, and Vice President Michael Usi enjoys 45 percent awareness. Dalitso Kabambe trails at 30 percent, with Kondwani Nankhumwa at just 16 percent.

Professor Michael Chasukwa, one of the lead researchers, was quick to clarify that the findings should not be mistaken for voter preference or popularity.

“It’s just an awareness that they know the presidential candidate,” he said, underscoring that the study measures recognition only.

Regionally, the survey paints a more detailed picture. In the central region, Chakwera dominates with 88 percent recognition, followed by Mutharika at 70 percent.

In the southern region, however, Mutharika leads with a commanding 88 percent, while Chakwera comes in at 82 percent. The northern region shows a tighter race, with Chakwera recognized by 83 percent of respondents and Mutharika by 77 percent.

Political analysts say the findings reflect entrenched regional loyalties but also underscore the formidable visibility of the two frontrunners. As Malawi edges closer to the 2025 elections, observers argue that recognition could be a critical factor in shaping campaign strategies, even if it does not directly translate into votes.
