President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has assured communities in Chikwawa that his administration is committed to addressing hunger through a mix of government-led initiatives and development partner support.
Speaking at Ndakwera Trading Centre on Wednesday during his whistle-stop tour of the district, President Chakwera said interventions under the Shire Valley Transformation Programme, irrigation support through the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF), and emergency food assistance by the World Food Programme (WFP) were effective ways of tackling food shortages.
The President also highlighted the availability of key social amenities in the area, noting that access to clean water and electricity at Ndakwera Trading Centre was helping to open up opportunities for local businesses.
“I am happy that you have potable water and electricity here at Ndakwera Trading Centre, and I know that people can do various businesses here,” Chakwera told the gathering.
His remarks followed concerns raised by Traditional Authority Ndakwera, who cited recurring hunger in the area due to unfavourable weather patterns. The chief thanked the President for engaging directly with the community and commended his government for implementing various development projects.
Chakwera acknowledged the challenges facing the district and reiterated his administration’s commitment to boosting food production and building resilience against climate-induced shocks.
The President is expected to continue his whistle-stop tour of Chikwawa with stops at Kakoma and Thabwa trading centres, among others.
