The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has declared Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) the winner of the 2025 presidential election with 3,352,439 votes, representing 56.8 percent.
Announcing the results at the National Tally Centre in Lilongwe on Wednesday evening, MEC Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja said the Commission had resolved all queries from political parties before the final declaration. She stressed that credibility and transparency guided every stage of the electoral process.
“I, Justice Annabel Mtalimanja, with the powers vested in me, now pronounce Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and Jane Ansah as the duly elected President and Vice President of the Republic of Malawi with 3,352,439 votes, representing 56.8 percent,” she announced.
Mtalimanja congratulated Mutharika on his victory and commended Malawians for turning out in large numbers on September 16, describing the high voter participation as a demonstration of the nation’s commitment to democracy and constitutional rights.
Before the declaration, MEC released results from the remaining 12 councils, including Kasungu, Mchinji, and Machinga, which completed the official tally and paved the way for the final announcement.
According to the final results, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) candidate Lazarus Chakwera finished second with 1,765,170 votes. He was followed by Dalitso Kabambe of the United Transformation Movement (UTM) with 211,430 votes, and Atupele Muluzi of the United Democratic Front (UDF) with 102,744 votes.
Other candidates received the following votes:
- Joyce Banda (People’s Party) – 86,106
- Akwame Bandawe (AAA) – 40,052
- Kamuzu Chibambo (PETRA) – 17,274
- Michael Usi (Odya Zake) – 16,922
Independent candidates:
- Adil Chilungo – 8,462
- Felix Chipojola – 8,638
- Phunziro Mvula – 9,378
- Milward Tobias – 2,086
- Smart Swira – 1,848
Other party candidates:
- Jordan Sauti (Patriotic Citizens Party) – 2,196
- Frank Mwenefumbo (National Democratic Party) – 5,354
- Kondwani Nankhumwa (People’s Democratic Party) – 12,251
This brought the total number of presidential contenders to 17.
The declaration ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Malawi Defence Force, Malawi Police Service, Malawi Prison Service, and Immigration Department, as well as political party representatives, civil society leaders, and members of the diplomatic community.
