The newly elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Zomba City South, Dr. James Mpunga of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), has called on supporters to celebrate the party’s election victory peacefully and with restraint.
Speaking during a series of impromptu thank-you meetings in his constituency, Dr. Mpunga expressed gratitude to residents for entrusting him with their votes and for electing Professor Peter Mutharika as Malawi’s new president.
He urged supporters to avoid insults, provocation, or violence, stressing that unity was crucial as the country moves forward under new leadership.
“The people of this country were tired of the previous government and suffered greatly over the past five years. Their vote will help bring about positive change,” Dr. Mpunga said.
He reaffirmed his campaign pledges, assuring constituents that he would deliver on development promises. Among his commitments, he highlighted plans to establish vocational training centers and create a youth fund worth K100 million to support young entrepreneurs in Zomba City.
The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has since confirmed Professor Peter Mutharika as the duly elected president of Malawi. In the parliamentary race, Dr. Mpunga secured victory in Zomba City South with 17,594 votes.
