PRESIDENT MUTHARIKA DELEGATES FORMER PRESIDENT JOYCE BANDA TO LEAD SADC MISSION TO MADAGASCAR

Malawi’s President, Professor Peter Mutharika, has delegated former President Dr. Joyce Banda to lead a Southern African Development Community (SADC) mission to Madagascar aimed at helping resolve the ongoing political instability in that country.

In his capacity as Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, President Mutharika said the regional body is deeply concerned about the deteriorating situation in Madagascar.

According to a statement released by the SADC Secretariat on 14th October 2025, reports of an attempted coup have raised serious concerns about peace, stability, and the democratic order in the country.

“Dr. Joyce Banda will be accompanied by members of the Mediation Reference Group — Ms. Helen Lwegaisla Brahim and Ambassador Joey M. Bimba — as well as representatives from the SADC Secretariat,” reads part of the statement.

President Mutharika reiterated SADC’s call for all parties involved in the crisis to exercise restraint and prioritize dialogue over confrontation, emphasizing that no further Malagasy lives should be lost due to the unrest.

He further urged law enforcement agencies in Madagascar to act with professionalism, impartiality, and restraint, in line with international human rights standards.

In her remarks, Dr. Banda expressed optimism that the mission would contribute to restoring peace and stability through inclusive and lasting solutions.

“This is a major step forward in strengthening regional cooperation for peace and stability,” said Banda.

Meanwhile, international media, including the BBC, have reported that Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina recently dissolved parliament in an apparent move to block an impeachment process initiated by the opposition.

Speaking from an undisclosed location, Rajoelina confirmed that he had fled the country for his own safety.
