The newly appointed Leader of opposition Simplex Chithyola Banda has promised to provide oversight role for government to be kept on watch so that they can fulfil and deliver the commitment that they made before Malawians.In an interview with The Truth Online Publication on Friday, Chithyola Banda said opposition in the August House is geared to provide remedies and solutions, at the same time to bring evidence-based kind of opposition which is very responsible based on accurate data on issues under deliberation.“The office of Leader of Opposition is the watchdog kind of office to ensure checks and balances to enhance accountability”, Chithyola Banda said.
Chithyola who is also former minister of Finance emphasized on the role of opposition which is to make sure that government delivers on its promises including commitments such as free secondary education, distribution of four bags of fertilizer per household among others.Banda further challenged that his leadership as leader of opposition will bring youth centric opposition that focuses on bringing youth services to ensure that service delivery is effectively done.Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Dr. Lazarus Chakwera appointed Chithyola as Leader of Opposition along with Moses Kunkuyu and Monica Chang’anamuno as Chief Whip and Deputy chief whip while Francis Belekanyama and Moreen Nseula were appointed as leader and deputy leader of backbenchers in August House.Meanwhile, the group called Mbadwa Zokhuzidwa commended MCP president Dr. Chakwera for nomination of Simplex Chithyola Banda as Leader of Opposition.
Leader for the group Fredrick Billy Malata said Malawians expect that under Chithyola’s leadership will serve the country with dignity and diligence.He made the remarks on Wednesday during a press briefing at Crown Hotel in Lilongwe where he also commended president Prof. Peter Mutharika for appointing cabinet ministers and deputy ministers based on merit.“The appointment of Hon. Chithyola Banda as Leader of Opposition by Dr. Chakwera is also a proof of his commitment in promoting intergenerational leadership and empowering the youth”, said Malata.
