MP CALLS FOR PARLIAMENTARY PROBE INTO MALGA OPERATIONS

Mzimba South legislator Emmanuel Chambulanyina Jere has called for the establishment of a parliamentary committee to investigate how the Malawi Local Government Association (MALGA) was formed and how it conducts its operations.

Speaking in the National Assembly, Jere said he is puzzled by the way the organisation functions, arguing that Malawi’s laws do not explicitly provide for such a body.

Concurring with him, Dedza Kasina MP Joshua Malango said if MALGA is not formally registered, Parliament must find a legal pathway to ensure it is properly recognised under national laws.

Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee, Steven Baba Malondera, announced that his committee will summon MALGA during the next parliamentary meeting to scrutinise the concerns raised by MPs.

Parliamentary discussion leader Jappie Mhango acknowledged the importance of the matter but stressed the need for MPs to follow proper legislative procedures when bringing such issues before the House.

Speaker of Parliament Sameer Suleman endorsed the proposal, directing both the Public Accounts Committee and the Legal Affairs Committee to review how MALGA was established and how it operates.
