AEJ PRESIDENT URGES JOURNALISTS TO CHAMPION ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

President of the Association of Environmental Journalists (AEJ), Titus Linzie, has called on journalists to take a proactive role in safeguarding the environment through responsible and informative reporting.

Linzie emphasized that the media has a critical duty to shape public understanding of environmental issues and inspire positive action that promotes sustainability.

He noted that journalists should prioritize stories that educate communities on proper environmental care, particularly as the country enters the rainy season, a period often associated with environmental degradation.

According to Linzie, poor waste management, deforestation, and encroachment on waterways tend to worsen during the rains, making timely and accurate reporting essential.

The AEJ president made these remarks ahead of the Association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), which is scheduled to take place tomorrow in Lilongwe.

He said the AGM will provide a platform for journalists to reflect on their role in environmental advocacy and to share experiences on covering environmental challenges.

Linzie added that discussions at the meeting will also focus on improving the quality of reporting on climate change and other environmental matters.

He expressed hope that the AGM would strengthen journalists’ commitment to environmental protection and enhance their capacity to influence policy and public behavior through the power of the media.
