UN Women has underscored the importance of empowering young people, especially girls, with digital skills to enable them to develop technology-driven solutions to community challenges.
The call was made in Lilongwe during the closing ceremony of the Malawi Girls Can Code Project.
Speaking at the event, Project Manager Ann Lipipa Chikoko said the initiative has equipped youth with practical digital skills that are both innovative and transformative.
Chikoko noted that the project has contributed to inclusive economic growth by enabling young people to apply technology in solving real-life problems.
“Through this project, the youth have developed mobile applications, websites, AI-driven solutions, and robotics projects that support everyday life,” she said.
She added that the outcomes of the project demonstrate the potential of young women in the digital and innovation space when given the right support.
Director of Higher Education in the Ministry of Education, Dr. Fritz Kadyoma, said the government is committed to sustaining the skills gained through the project.
Dr. Kadyoma explained that the skills will be integrated into existing education systems even after the project comes to an end.
