President Peter Mutharika has officially moved into Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, marking his return to the country’s main seat of government.
The development has been confirmed by State House Press Secretary Cathy Maulidi, who spoke to The Truth Online a short while ago.
Maulidi indicated that the President moved into Kamuzu Palace this evening after departing Sanjika Palace in Blantyre earlier this afternoon.
President Mutharika returned to Malawi on Monday through Bakili Muluzi International Airport in Blantyre following a private trip to South Africa.
The President had left the country on 1st December, a move that sparked public debate among Malawians due to initial government silence on the purpose and significance of the trip.
Earlier, government officials stated that President Mutharika would only return to Kamuzu Palace after the completion of targeted maintenance works at the main residence.
The maintenance was said to be necessary to restore the palace to a suitable condition for occupation.
Reports had previously emerged that Kamuzu Palace was vandalised during the transition period between the outgoing Malawi Congress Party administration and the incoming Democratic Progressive Party government.
