The Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Bright Msaka, SC, on Monday joined the Second Vice President, Enock Chihana, on a tour of the Mombera University construction site in Mzimba District, as Government steps up efforts to resume and complete the stalled project.
The Second Vice President, who has been appointed by President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika as the champion for the Mombera University project, was briefed on the current status of the development immediately upon arrival at the site.
Earlier in the day, the project implementation team presented Minister Msaka with a detailed overview of the campus master plan, including the layout and the land that has been earmarked for the construction of the university.
The tour attracted the participation of key stakeholders, among them officials from the Ministries of Finance, Lands, and Transport and Public Works, as well as traditional leader Inkosi ya Makhosi M’mbelwa.
Following the site inspection, the Second Vice President, accompanied by Minister Msaka and prospective investors, proceeded to Mzimba Boma where a stakeholders’ meeting was convened.
During the meeting, Chihana directed contractors involved in the project to fast-track the resumption of construction works and to revisit some of the original designs in order to align them with modern architectural standards.
In his remarks, Minister Msaka reaffirmed Government’s commitment to strengthening higher education infrastructure and expanding access to tertiary education as a way of equipping Malawians with relevant skills for national development.
He emphasized that construction works at Mombera University must commence without further delay, a position strongly echoed by the Second Vice President as he called for collective responsibility in delivering the long-awaited institution.
