HIGH COURT IN LILONGWE SET TO HEAR BAIL APPLICATION FOR MCP SECRETARY GENERAL

The High Court in Lilongwe is today expected to hear a bail application filed by Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Secretary General Richard Chimwendo Banda, who is facing an attempted murder charge.

Chimwendo Banda is accused of attempting to kill Frank Chawanda in Dowa District in an incident that allegedly occurred in 2021.

The case has attracted significant public and political attention due to his senior position within the ruling party.

The bail application was initially scheduled to be heard last Friday but was postponed.

The adjournment followed an objection from the state, which said it was not ready with its response documents to the submissions filed by the defense.

State prosecutors informed the court that they required additional time to prepare and properly respond to the arguments raised by the accused’s legal team.

The court subsequently granted the request and rescheduled the hearing.

This morning, High Court Judge Mzondi Mvula is expected to preside over the matter. Court proceedings are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.

Legal observers say the outcome of the bail application could have implications for the progression of the case, particularly given its high-profile nature.

Richard Chimwendo Banda was arrested on 12 December this year in connection with the alleged offense.

He has since remained in custody pending further court determinations.

He is jointly charged with Alfred Dala Kadula, who is also answering to the same attempted murder charge before the High Court.

The court is expected to provide guidance on the next steps once the bail application hearing concludes.
