40 RESCUED AFTER BOAT BREAKS DOWN ON CHIZUMULU ISLAND

The Department of Disaster Management Affairs has rescued 40 people who were left stranded on Chizumulu Island following a boat breakdown.

The incident occurred after the vessel they were travelling in developed a fault due to strong Mpoto winds on Lake Malawi.

According to a committee member on the island, Nelson Katapa, the rescue operation was successfully carried out by relevant authorities.

Katapa says the victims have since been taken to Mochu Primary School on Chizumulu Island for temporary shelter.

He adds that the rescued passengers have been provided with food as arrangements continue for their safety and wellbeing.

Reports indicate that the boat was travelling to Nkhata Bay at the time of the incident.

The engine fault occurred on Saturday, forcing the boat to stop its journey mid-way.

Authorities say they are continuing to monitor the situation to ensure all affected people remain safe.
