The United Nations (UN) Security Council is set to hold a special meeting tomorrow, Monday, following reports that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has been arrested by the United States military.
According to Reuters, the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, has described the reported arrest of President Maduro as unacceptable under international norms.
The request for the emergency meeting has been pushed forward by Colombia, Russia, and China, who have called on the Security Council to urgently address the situation.
The UN Security Council is made up of fifteen member states, including both permanent and non-permanent members.
This will not be the first time the Council has discussed tensions between the United States and Venezuela, as it met twice last year.
Those previous meetings took place in October and December, during a period of rising diplomatic disagreements between the two countries.
The current developments are expected to further escalate already strained relations between Washington and Caracas.
Reports indicate that President Maduro and his wife have now arrived in the United States through Stewart Military Airfield in New York.
