The Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Dr. Shadric Namalomba, on Thursday held talks with a World Bank delegation in Lilongwe, focusing on key digital initiatives aimed at accelerating Malawi’s digital transformation.
The delegation was led by World Bank Data Lab Programme Manager Holly Krambeck, who joined discussions on the development of a pioneering Chichewa Artificial Intelligence (AI) language model and other technology-driven opportunities for the country.
During the meeting, the parties explored how the Chichewa AI model could enhance digital services, improve access to information, and strengthen public service delivery through innovative technology.
Dr. Namalomba commended the World Bank for supporting the initiative, describing the Chichewa AI project as a significant milestone in Malawi’s efforts to embrace digital innovation and modernise government services.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working with development partners to expand the use of digital technologies that can improve efficiency, inclusivity, and economic growth.
Later in the afternoon, the Minister also met officials from Luntha Television, led by Director Fr. David Niwagaba, to discuss locally driven digital innovations and opportunities for collaboration.
The discussions centred on strategic partnerships that could promote innovation within Malawi’s media and technology sectors while supporting the country’s broader digital agenda.
The engagements form part of the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to strengthen partnerships with both international and local stakeholders in advancing digital transformation and expanding access to technology-driven solutions across Malawi.
