Police in Zomba have launched a murder investigation following the death of 25-year-old nurse Robert Kumtenga, who allegedly died after being assaulted by a mob at Chikanda Village in Traditional Authority Chikowi.
The incident occurred on the night of July 4, 2026, and has left the local community in shock as authorities intensify efforts to bring those responsible to justice.
According to police, Kumtenga was employed at Zomba City Clinic at the time of his death.
Preliminary investigations indicate that he had been drinking beer before the incident and is believed to have mistakenly entered a banana stall in the village.
The owner of the stall reportedly raised an alarm after noticing Kumtenga inside, prompting community members to gather at the scene.
Police say the crowd allegedly assaulted the 25-year-old nurse, inflicting serious injuries before he was rescued and taken to Zomba Central Hospital for medical treatment.
Despite efforts by health workers to save his life, Kumtenga later died while receiving treatment.
A post-mortem examination established that he succumbed to severe head injuries caused by multiple deep cuts.
Police have since opened a murder case and say investigations are underway to identify and arrest all individuals who allegedly took part in the fatal assault.
